Mad Men piqued my interest this week and I found the source of Peggy and Joey's inside joke. Here is the commercial they were either mocking or thinking up:

Actually it was a sketch written in 1951 mocking soap opera dialogue by Stan Freberg. It was used often, during the 50's. There is a funny version in the 1955 Alec Guinness film To Paris with Love. Freberg later became very successful and well known for writing comic advertising and that is what the creators of Mad Men were paying homage to, even though by 1964 in the show the sketch was very out of date.
