When I was but a wee lad, my grandmother reared me to become the TV addict I am today. We would watch EVERYTHING from The Waltons to Happy Days to Little House on the Prairie and always with a bowl of freshly popped popcorn between us. No show was too boring nor too cheesy (see: The Shields and Yarnell Show).
One of my favorite events was ABC's Circus of the Stars. On it, big celebrities would perform circus acts and, if memory serves, they did them well. Brooke Shields doing aerial work with a rope, Erik Estrada as a ringmaster, Loni Anderson walking on broken glass, and Dana Plato on the flying trapeze were just some of the acts. Where else could one see Lynda Carter getting knives thrown at her? I loved every minute of it and hoped it would be on every year.
Now that it's back, I'm beginning to wish I never would have placed that hope into the universe. Celebrity Circus starts tonight on NBC and to call their cast celebrities would be too kind (Blu Cantrell? She's a one-hit wonder...). If you're gonna use the word "celebrity" or "star" in your title, then have some that are currently that: stars. Dancing with the STARS? Who was a star in that cast? Shannon Elizabeth?? And CELEBRITY Fit Club? Oh yes, I forgot, Erin Moran is a huge celebrity. If I see one more picture of her in US Weekly...
The sad part is that she was a star/celebrity back when the original Circus Of The Stars specials aired as were those who performed on them. Unfortch I don't think we're gonna see Victoria Beckham on the tightrope or Tom Cruise riding a motorcycle through a ring of fire anytime soon. (Note: I just re-read that Tom Cruise sentence and the impliucvations were grody. Sorry.) Celebs have lost their senses of humor.
