I was unsure if Johnny Depp was the best choice to play the title character in Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd (directed by Tim Burton) but I went with it. Today, however, it has been announced that the director's wife Helena Bonham-Carter has been cast opposite Johnny as Mrs. Lovett. This. Is. WRONG!!! On Broadway the part was immortalized by Angela Lansbury in the late '70s, revisited by Beth Fowler in a scaled down version in the late '80s, then rediscovered by Patti LuPone this past year. And now Helena Bonham-Carter??? I can assure you that the only thing she'll do correctly is the accent.
Tim, the casting of your wife is obvious and shallow. Just how many women did you see for that particular part?
My guess is one.
P.S. Sorry I'm so bitter, it's just that it's one of, if not my favorite, musical.
I think you're dead one...I thought the same thing with the casting of Ms Lovett...
One of my fave musicals too...I played the Beadle in a regional production. Great role, Great show....
