Note to self: Do not count on tickets being available for an evening performance even though you're getting there to purchase hours before the matinee.
Guess who didn't get to see The Color Purple last night? Yep, me. I'm still planning on going but was really looking forward to it as something fun to do on my actaul birthday. Oh well. My parents still came in and we had my annual Mexican feast. This year we went to Mama Mexico on the UWS. My mother put it all into prespective as to why Mexican is my fave b-day meal... You see the night before she had gone into labor with me she invited friends over for a huge Mexican food-fest which she, herself, cooked. She tells me that numerous enchiladas were inhaled, margaritas were imbibed (it was the 70's and mothers still drank while pregnant...), and TUMS were taken in the middle of the night to settle what she called "indigestion." When she and my father realized that it wasn't an upset stomach or gas, my mum was rushed to the hospital where she gave birth to the person I know as myself the follwing afternoon. This food/labor incident also prompted my mother to affectionately call me her "little enchilada" for years to come. And that, she thinks, is why I loves me some Mexican food on my birthday. I even ordered had a chicken mole enchilada last night...
I tried the same thing a few weeks ago for The Color Purple and Wicked, on a Friday night no less. Well, the Color Purple had one ticket somewhere in the back of the orchestra for $110 (not interested!), and Wicked was completely sold out for months. At the Gershwin theater, the tourists camped out for their reserved seats snickered at me for even asking about tickets for the same night. In response, I swung my sassy self around and said to them, "Well, guess who's going to London in September? ME. Guess what show is opening there with Idina Menzel as Elphaba? (I point to the Wicked poster nearby) Guess who's not a tourist and saw this show before the Tonys in 2004? ME. PFFTTTT! I just had nothing better to do tonight." You should have seen their faces. Tourists. PFFFTTT!
I wouldn't have the guts to do that to Oprah, though. I calmy left the Broadway and made plans to order tickets online. :-) I ended up at the Rent ticket lottery again that night - that Mimi up close is one hot mama! I'll see Celie latah on. PEACE!
