Every year I watch the Scripps National Spelling Bee not to gawk at the hyper-intelligent kids who compete, but to better my vocabulary. One never knows when one is going to have to spell the word kulturkampf.
This year's winner spelled the work guerdon correctly while the second place winner lost to the word prosopopoeia. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the words supposed to get harder as the competition goes on? GUERDON?? Past winning words have included appoggiatura, serrefine, ursprache, and autochthonous. (Please note that the boy who won this year is incredible and I think he could have written a term paper on prosopopoeia in his sleep.)
I do think, however, that irony has reared it's head in the very definition of guerdon - a reward.
Congratulations, Sameer Mishra! U rok!
